Lionel was not one to give up without a fight and kept moving his pieces in a desperate attempt to defend his king, but it was starting to become clear that he'd spread himself too thin.

"And why don't you enlighten me then. Where are we, you and I?" Lionel asked in a frustrated tone, that almost sounded bored.

He didn't see his son enter the room, or he wouldn't have asked the question.
